It seems that Henk Voerhoff has got me again. After designing and building the Mad Hatter, I was obsessed with recreating another of Henk’s visions, but this one had to be fully functional. The broken dresser, has five large fully functional drawers with low friction drawer slide tape, drawer stops to prevent the drawers from being pulled out too far and a completely level top to put a jewelry box or TV or lamp.
Henk, a New Zealander, has been an inspiration for me for a long time. His furniture designs defy logic. “Alice in Wonderland” and “Mad Hatter” are phrases that help define his style. But Henk’s style is Henk’s style. No one else can claim it. They can only attempt to copy it.
After at least 40 hours designing the broken drawer on SketchUp, I set out to build it from the backboard up. Three months and hundreds of design changes later, I finally have a finished fully-functional furniture piece.
I used leftover paint from previous projects. It’s nice to empty the old paint can shelf instead of add to it. The top was finished in a Satin Polyurethane. That’s three quart cans eliminated from the paint shelf!
